It was a fun and exciting weekend in Boise as Krabill drove his Northwest Hitter to victory at the 2013 Ignitor at Firebird. Phenix is excited to be sponsoring the team at Bucky Austin Racing this season and we enjoyed seeing them in action.
Defending Ignitor champ Jason Rupert was running his Black Plague Funny Car, but struggled with tire shake all weekend. That didn't stop the team from having fun and making the best of their time on the track.
Also making his debut was newcomer Scott Stanger driving his Bad Manners Nitro Funny Car. Scott has long campaigned his Bad Manners Fiat Blown Alcohol Altered and made his move into Nitro with the new car.
Phenix is proud to be affiliated with all of these teams and we wish them the best this season!

<![CDATA[Sneak Preview: Champion Speed Shop Special AA/Fuel Dragster]]>Wed, 06 Mar 2013 17:32:46 GMThttp://www.phenixindustries.com/3/post/2013/03/sneak-previewchampion-speed-shop-special-aafuel-dragster.htmlThis weekend marks the season opener with the 55th running of the annual March Meet. Piloting the Champion Speed Shop AA/Fuel Dragster is 2012 NHRA Heritage Series Top Fuel Champion Adam Sorokin.
Adam Sorokin is the son of the late Mike Sorokin, legendary driver of the Hall Of Fame inducted “Surfers” Top Fuel team of the ‘60’s. Adam’s father was tragically killed from a clutch/driveline failure at the wheel of a Top Fuel Dragster at Orange County Raceway on December 30th 1967. Adam was only a year old and his mother was eighteen. As Adam grew up, his mother made sure he knew who his father was and what he did for a living. She brought him to the races at Orange County Raceway and introduced him to racers who knew his father. It was at this point that the hook was set. Meeting the drivers and watching them in their fire suits and helmets roar down the quarter mile in Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars sparked something in Adam. His mother, Robyn recognized this spark, but was less than enthusiastic to have her son follow his father’s footsteps into the same dangerous (and potentially fatal) activity. The same father who was killed at the age of only 28! So even though Adam’s mother showed him where he came from, she also tried to keep him from being too enamored with racing - but it was too late. It’s all Adam really wanted to do now. In 1985, Adam’s mother was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer at the age of 37. It would be just four months later that she too would pass away but not before giving Adam her blessing to do what would make him happy in life. She told him “I know what you want to do – please be safe”. At 18 years old, Adam knew that was a green light to pursue a racing career.

The 2012 Heritage Series Points Title was a great victory for the team.“It was a great year for us,” said team owner Bob McLennan. “Having the small block win it is so special for our family — this one was for (team founder) Jim McLennan. I know he was watching over us. The entire team knows he is our foundation to running this car. He provided us with the never say die confidence in the small-block Chevrolet.”

Champion Speed Shop is led by Tony Bernardini, along with Mike Perry and Jeff Stich, who specialize in cylinder-head maintenance; Dave Carkhuff works the bottom end; Tom McLennan dials in the clutch; Tom Homer manages the fuel; Dennis Barranza and Nick Sharp serve as the anything-goes utility-men , Bob Gavron keeps everyone well fed and Sparky keeps everybody honest as the team statistician.

Phenix is proud to be a sponsor of the team and we wish them the best of luck this weekend and in the upcoming season.

<![CDATA[Sneak Preview: Austin & O’Brien “Northwest Hitter” Funny Car]]>Wed, 27 Feb 2013 20:02:10 GMThttp://www.phenixindustries.com/3/post/2013/02/sneak-previewaustin-obrien-northwest-hitterfunny-car.htmlThe new Austin and O'brien Funny Car hit the strip last weekend to test for the 55th running of the March Meet. The car ran a solid 5.81 at 253mph and 5.77 248mph in testing at Famoso. The '77 Firebird is sporting a new paint job by Kenny Youngblood done at Benchmark RV in Sun Valley, California.
The car is once again piloted by Kris Krabill, one of the fiercest and youngest drivers on the Nostalgia Funny Car Circuit. At an early age of 16, Kris joined the list of young racers in a series of bracket racing events. During 1992-1994, Torco Racing Oils signed on as a primary sponsor for Kris’s Super Comp dragster. As a young racer, Kris won close to 30 races and finished in the top ten each year. At the end of the 1994 season, Kris met Gary Turner during a race in Woodburn, Oregon and worked as a full-time crewmember on Turner’s Top Alcohol Dragster until the 1997 season.

During his 2006 Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car rookie season, Kris secured the 2006 Goodguys Nostalgia Funny Car Championship and became the 3rd member of the honorable Auto Meter 5 Second Club. In the 2006 season, Kris also went undefeated and had his name become forever etched in the history books as being the first Funny Car winner at the famed California Hot Rod Reunion. Since the 2006 racing season, he has competed all over the country and has won the largest races in the class.

Kris and the team at Bucky Austin Racing are going to be intense competition on the track this season. Phenix is proud to be a sponsor of the Northwest Hitter and wish them the best at the upcoming 2013 March Meet. Bio courtesy kriskrabill.com

<![CDATA[Sneak Preview the Black Plague Funny Car]]>Mon, 18 Feb 2013 21:09:30 GMThttp://www.phenixindustries.com/3/post/2013/02/sneak-preview-the-black-plague-funny-car.html2011 and 2012 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Nostalgia Funny Car champion Jason Rupert will begin his quest for a three-peat with a new '69 Camaro body and a new look. Rupert, who drove his Mert Littlefield tribute Camaro to two titles, back-to-back wins at Firebird Raceway’s annual Ignitor event, and the only 260-mph run in the history of the class, will pay homage with the new body to two of his mentors — his father, Frank, and longtime nitro crew chief Richard Bays. Frank, a presence in West Coast nitro racing dating back to the early 1960s, drove the Bays & Rupert Black Plague Funny Car in the 1970s. Rupert, a 41-year-old fabricator by trade, is mounting the body on his Grant Downing-built chassis at his Anaheim, Calif.-based shop. “I’m really excited for the start of the season,” said Rupert. “The class is so tough, and more than 30 cars show up to the races in Bakersfield. It’s a neat deal to get to honor the people who influenced me growing up. You hear a lot about ‘the Snake’ and ‘the Mongoose’ in that era, which is all good, but my heroes were guys like my dad, Richard Bays, Mert Littlefield, and Gary Densham.” Rupert will debut his car at the March Meet at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield on March 7-10. His efforts are supported by Lucas Oil and Phenix Industries.

<![CDATA[Phenix Welcomes a New Sales Rep to SoCal]]>Wed, 23 Jan 2013 21:17:15 GMThttp://www.phenixindustries.com/3/post/2013/01/phenix-welcomes-a-new-sales-rep-to-socal.htmlPhenix would like to welcome our new sales rep Steve Powers to the team! Steve brings with him an extensive background in the auto-aftermarket. Steve owned a Mac Tool distributorship for over 10 years, worked as an account manager for RPC, and was a service writer for a dealership for several years.

Steve, a self described gear-head since a very young age, grew up in Orange County. He studied Business at Cypress College and raced his ’72 El Camino in the early 80’s at OCIR until it was closed. Since then he developed a passion for anything Corvette related and often attends Corvette runs. He and his spouse of 19 years Diane both own Corvettes, and Steve says he has a “soft spot” for the ’64 – ’72 GM A-bodies, and plans to own another soon. In addition to his Corvette addiction, he also enjoys attending Nostalgia Drag Racing events.

Steve Powers has already hit the ground running, calling on new as well as existing customers in the Southern California area. Steve is a great team player who we are pleased to be working with as we look forward to another year of exciting growth and opportunity.

<![CDATA[What is the useful life of your race car plumbing?]]>Wed, 16 Jan 2013 21:37:18 GMThttp://www.phenixindustries.com/3/post/2013/01/what-is-the-useful-life-of-your-race-car-plumbing.htmlToday most of us who race cars, boats, or anything we can find with a high performance motor are using specially designed plumbing for fuel delivery, oil lines and water systems. There is a common misconception out there that once you have the special plumbing it will last for a lifetime, but unfortunately that’s simply not true. Aluminum AN fittings will last a long time and sometimes the life of the race car, but that is not the case with wire braided rubber hoses.

Today, racers are running into situations where our racing fuel producers are adding proprietary chemicals that we do not know about. They tend to be very secretive about what some of these substances are and what effects they can have on race plumbing. Racers have always known that methanol is hard on fuel lines and that braided lines need to be replaced on a regular basis, at least every couple of years.

However, today we are finding more situations where racing gas is damaging fuel systems after several racing seasons of use and reuse, with the recommendation to users that they change out their hoses every couple of years to avoid potential problems and damage to an expensive race engine.

With these additives, the interior wall of the stainless steel-braided, chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) hose is drying out and cracking, leading to possible leakage and contamination of the fuel system, plugged jets or injectors. The steel-braided exterior of the hose is masking these potential problems.

One major advantage to the Phenix Industries-designed, American-made hose ends is that they are manufactured as a compression style hose end and, as such, it is a simple matter to change out the worn out hose and reuse all the hose ends and adapters.

By contrast, cutter-style hose ends are much more difficult to reuse, since rubber left inside the cutter itself is difficult or impossible to remove, to be reused with new stainless steel-braided replacement hose. Both styles work very well but it is our opinion, at Phenix Industries that the compression style is easier to reassemble, much more reusable, and in the long run saves the racer money.

The hose portion of a plumbing system is one of the cheapest parts of your race car to replace, so please be careful to fully check and replace hoses on a regular basis.

After forty years of racing and driving different types of race cars, I can honestly tell you the only thing that has ever scared me about racing – is fire. Don’t find out the hard way by trying to save a couple hundred dollars on regular maintenance of old, deteriorating stainless steel-braided, chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) hose, replace them today.

John passed away at home surrounded by friends and family. He was Phenix Industries first salesman and a close personal friend of 25 years. Over that time both John and I have been through good times and bad in both our lives and through it all we remained close friends and always had the ability to share a laugh. Everyone at Phenix will miss his smile and his laugh.
